    Applying for Student Visas

    You can begin applying for a student visa to study and work in Canada after your university issues you a letter of acceptance. The application process is conducted online or can be done via a visa application center near you.

    International students enrolled in a long-term academic programme of 6 months or longer have to apply for a student visa. They will also need a temporary resident permit issued by the Canadian Diplomatic Mission. You can choose to apply for a visa via the Student Direct Stream (SDS) and get it much faster than usual.

    Registering via the SDS stream requires you to arrange your biometric proofs and documents beforehand. We have provided a detailed breakdown of this in the visa checklist. You will have to pass the following stages in the application process-

    • Check your eligibility and complete the form on the official website of the Immigration and Citizenship Department, here.
    • Print the page with the personal reference code provided.
    • Sign in to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada website and select the study visa option. Start here.
    • Follow all the instructions, upload documents and pay the indicated fees
    • Once confirmed, you will see a confirmation number and a biometric instruction letter in your IRCC account. Take the printouts and retain them for the rest of the process. If you have registered via SDS, you will get an answer within 20-30 days.
    • Failing to meet any criteria mentioned under SDS will push your visa application in the non-SDS category.

    Visa Costs and Charges

    International students have to pay the following fee for the initial student visa-

    • For study visa- CDN$150
    • Additional biometrics fee- CDN$85

    For a post-study work permit, students have to pay-

    • For the PGWP- CDN$155
    • For the Open Work Permit Holder- CDN$100
    Visa Checklist
